The research in our laboratory focuses on obtaining mechanistic insights into the role of the trillions of bacteria and viruses within the gastrointestinal tract in nutrition and pharmacology. To achieve these goals, we take a multi-disciplinary team approach, using diverse techniques from biochemistry, genetics, genomics, microbial ecology, and pharmacology coupled to studies in the lab, in gnotobiotic mice, and in human cohorts. These projects have involved collaborations within UCSF and with investigators around the world. Members of our group benefit from the strong training environment at UCSF, with world-class programs in microbiome research, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology coupled to a unique spirit of collaboration and support for trainees.
